Tashirojima is called Cat Island. Islanders once kept cats to guard silkworms from mice, and feeding cats is tied to good luck. In 2015 about 80 people lived here, the cats outnumbered them, and pet dogs are not allowed. A small cat shrine stands between the two villages.
